About the Role

Gameto is seeking a Vice President of Accounting to lead the company’s accounting function as we grow as a clinical- and commercial-stage biotechnology company. This role will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls, while serving as a key partner to the CEO, VP of Strategic Finance and broader leadership team. In addition to leading the accounting function, this role will oversee core HR and workplace operations, including payroll, benefits, and employee administration. The VP of Accounting will also manage key operational vendors, including the company’s outsourced IT provider, and will directly manage an admin team member supporting day-to-day office and people processes.

The VP of Accounting will play a critical role in building scalable financial infrastructure, ensuring compliance with US GAAP, and supporting the company through continued growth. This is a hands-on leadership role ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced startup environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own and oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, revenue recognition, payroll, and AP/AR
  • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
  • Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with US GAAP
  • Establish and maintain strong internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures
  • Manage external audits and serve as the primary point of contact for auditors and advisors
  • Partner closely with the VP of Strategic Finance on budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
  • Support fundraising, investor reporting, and board materials as needed
  • Negotiate contracts and oversee the implementation of new vendors as necessary (e.g., IT, health insurance providers, payroll, accounting, or financial systems)
  • Ensure smooth transitions and integrations when changing or onboarding vendors
  • Manage, mentor, and scale the accounting team over time
  • Ensure compliance with tax, regulatory, and reporting requirements across jurisdictions
  • Implement and optimize accounting systems and tools to support company growth
  • Own core HR operations for a growing team, including onboarding/offboarding administration, benefits administration, employee recordkeeping, and coordination of compliance requirements across jurisdictions
  • Maintain appropriate controls and documentation for employee-related processes and data, partnering with Legal and leadership as needed on policies, employment agreements, and compliance workflows

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership roles
  • CPA required
  • Deep knowledge of US GAAP and experience with complex accounting matters
  • Prior experience in biotech, life sciences, healthcare, or venture-backed startups preferred
  • Proven experience managing audits and working with external advisors
  • Strong systems mindset with experience scaling accounting operations
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity and a fast-moving startup environment
  • Comfort operating as a cross-functional operator across Accounting, HR, and IT, with strong judgment and discretion
  • Familiarity with QuickBooks and Bill.com is a plus
  • Able to commute to Gameto’s Austin office at least 2x a week
